Thinking Outside the (Cardboard) Box with Bell Phillips

  • Metropolitan Wharf, 70 Wapping Wall, Wapping Wall London, England, E1W 3SS United Kingdom (map)

Open to the participants of People’s Pavilion 2023.

We have a responsibility as architects to think radically about how and what we build. With that in mind, we are setting you a big challenge: with only our office waste as building material, collected over a few months by the Bell Phillips team, we are challenging you to think big & outside the (cardboard) box.

Using items that are thrown away every day, such as cartons, boxes, and large carpet cardboard tubes, we are asking you to collaborate to design and build a human-scale pod. Building at 1:1 gives an unprecedented understanding of creating space. We will ask you to consider the following: What is the definition of a shelter? How does it need to perform? How can waste become an inspiration? How do you create stability and strength from lightweight materials?

Bell Phillips is an award-winning architecture practice in East London’s Wapping. Designing since 2004, we’ve evolved into a practice with a diverse portfolio filled with work across several sectors. Our reputation for high-quality design is illustrated through our built schemes, high-profile competition wins, awards, and features in publications and exhibitions. As a practice, we have a strong moral and social purpose that is translated by using our skills as architects to make a tangible, positive impact on people’s quality of life.

Sign up via Eventbrite and join us for the workshop from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM (with lunch included) on Tuesday, 4th April 2023. Please let us know in advance if there are any dietary restrictions or allergies.
