Visit to the Old Vic Theatre with Haworth Tompkins

  • The Old Vic 103 The Cut London, England, SE1 8NB United Kingdom (map)

Open to the participants of People’s Pavilion 2023.

As part of the People's Pavilion 2023, the role of 'the Stage' is important. With plans to accommodate a series of live events, Haworth Tompkins and Beyond the Box invite young people who have taken part in the People's Pavilion this year to learn about the factors that are considered when designing for performance, looking at the main auditorium, set design, access, sound and lighting with Nick Royce from Haworth Tompkins and The Old Vic production team.

Receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the iconic Old Vic Theatre and learn to apply these considerations to the People’s Pavilion 2023.

Haworth Tompkins is an architectural studio, voted AJ100 Practice of the Year in 2020 and 2022. Founded in 1991 by Graham Haworth and Steve Tompkins, the studio has an international reputation for theatre design. The Liverpool Everyman Theatre won the 2014 RIBA Stirling Prize for the best building of the year by a UK architect, and Haworth Tompkins was part of the Gold Award UK-winning team at the Prague Quadrennial. Performance projects include the Royal Court, the Young Vic Theatre (shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2007), NT Future, The Bridge, Bristol Old Vic, and Battersea Arts Centre.

Nick Royce joined Haworth Tompkins in 2019. He is currently working on several of the studio’s performing arts projects. Prior to joining the practice, Nick worked on similar projects at Charcoalblue. He studied Architecture at the University of Edinburgh and the Manchester School of Architecture, where he was awarded the Simpson Haugh Award for Outstanding Modelmaking. Nick was a Teaching Assistant at MSA and maintains ties with the school. He also completed a short course on Set Design at Central Saint Martins and was the Creative Director of the Edinburgh University Savoy Opera Group.
