The People’s Pavilion: Youth Designing London’s Cultural Space

This film tells the story of The People’s Pavilion, an award-winning youth-led architecture and cultural project developed by Beyond the Box. Inspired by a question raised by young designers visiting the Serpentine Pavilion—“Where are the spaces designed by young Londoners?”—the initiative set out to explore what it means for young people to shape cultural space in their city.

The project began with a youth research programme exploring access to culture and barriers facing young Londoners. Insights from this work informed a design competition inviting young people across East London to imagine a new pavilion for the city.

Working alongside architects, artists and creative practitioners, shortlisted teams developed proposals for a pavilion and cultural programme. The winning design by Team Reverie was built at Here East in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and accompanied by a youth-curated cultural festival.
